A delightful surprise
The law has finally caught up with Kentucky moonshiner & whiskey rebel Bubba Bunyan. Now that he has been arrested, you will have 60 minutes to steal his prized moonshine before the law arrives.
It was our final day in Florida, and we were making our way back to Tampa after a visit to family in Cape Coral. We were already booked in to play the games at The Exit Games Florida, but we weren’t due there until much later in the day, leaving us plenty of time to make an impromptu stop to break up the driving. Legends Escape Rooms were very conveniently located just off the route to our hotel, offered plenty of parking, and had availability for Moonshine Cabin at the perfect time. A No Brainer, right?
Traffic wasn’t as bad as we were expecting, so we arrived with a little time to spare. There wasn’t much in the area to get out and explore, so we decided to check if our GM was ready to see us a bit earlier than the requested 15 minutes before our game was due to start. She wasn’t quite ready, but we were still warmly welcomed into the spacious reception area to get ourselves settled while she did one final check of the room to make sure it was ready to go.
We weren’t waiting long before she returned, and it was game time. We were quickly given the rundown of what to, and what not to, do – You know: Do use your brain, don’t use your muscles. Do investigate everything, don’t stick your fingers in plug sockets. With the health and safety out of the way, we followed our GM down the corridor and came to a stop outside the entrance to Moonshine Cabin.
IMMERSION/ROOM DESIGN
The theming for the games at Legends Escape Rooms spills out into the hall, helping to set the tone even before we stepped over the threshold and into a forest, complete with the sounds of nature. The door closed behind us, and we found ourselves staring at a cabin. The set was solid and chunky – a proper cabin built within the space – and there were plenty of things to investigate and explore as we uncovered Buba Bunyan’s secrets.
Moonshine Cabin felt like it should have been a linear game, but we were definitely able to complete certain things out of what felt like the proper sequence. Often, this left us wondering what we were meant to do with the information that had been revealed… at least until we wandered around again and discovered what we had overlooked the first time. This gave the game a slightly disjointed flow for us, but eventually everything came together, and we found ourselves back on track, and flying through to the ultimate conclusion.
PUZZLES
Moonshine Cabin had loads of puzzles that resulted in codes for physical padlocks, but there were also quite a few surprises in store. There were plenty of more tactile challenges, including one that we have never encountered in an escape room before but fit perfectly (and Gord thoroughly enjoyed).
The puzzles we encountered utilised many of the common Escape Room tropes – cyphers and codes, searching, observation, logic, and pattern recognition, but they fit well within the room. Each challenge we encountered was fair, and followed through logically to its conclusion. In fact, the only stumbling blocks we encountered were pretty much entirely us just being a bit dim.
GM/CLUE SYSTEM
Sadly, we never actually caught the name of our GM, but she was a lovely and welcoming young lady. More importantly, she was an excellent and attentive host.
During our briefing our GM clearly pointed out the button we would need to use for clues. Simply press the button, and a clue would be sent through on the screen, accompanied by the sound of a gunshot to alert you to their presence. Of course, this button would then time out for five minutes, so if you were still stuck after the first clue, you were on your own until the red light went out. Luckily, when we determined we did, in fact, need a clue, help came through almost immediately and was usually enough to get us back on track without just giving us the solution. Either way, the clues were pretty clear so we didn’t need to worry about the five minute time-out on the system.
ANYTHING ELSE
I knew next to nothing before heading to Legends Escape Rooms, but I was pleasantly surprised. Moonshine Cabin was fun, fair, and filled with some unexpected things. It’s a shame we only had time for one game at Legends, especially if their others are of a similar quality.
