Just to be a little different we have decided to create our rankings not on stars, but on light bulbs. It’s really worth noting that different people can experience the same escape room and have very differing views and opinions. We hope that our reviews help you but they really are just our opinions and even if we didn’t enjoy a room you may find it is the best room you’ve ever done. So use our reviews, if you will, as a guide and not gospel.
One bulb | Avoid doing this unless you desperately need your escape room fix. Although you may come away feeling worse than before you went in. | |
---|---|---|
Two bulbs | A room that has merit but could do a lot to improve. Most two ratings have something about them we enjoyed but generally they fell a bit flat with us. | |
Three bulbs | This is reserved for rooms that we enjoyed but only just. There will have been more good points than bad, but not many more. | |
Four bulbs | I’d imagine most of our rooms average around this rating as we read reviews before choosing rooms so will only do decent rooms (for the most part). These are solid rooms and worth doing if you get a chance. | |
Five bulbs | To get a five you’ve got to be pretty special. Something about the room, your organisation, and the GM will have stood out as being better than the norm and are close to perfection. Definitely do these rooms! |
Obviously the more rooms we do the more our definition of average will change. When reading our reviews look at the date they were reviewed as things may have changed since we did them for the better or worse, but we won’t retrospectively change our ratings.
All our reviews are accurate at the time of publication, but owners often continue to make changes during a game’s lifetime, so your experience may differ to ours. Make sure you note the date of publication when you read our reviews. So yeah, we may like a game that you hate, and you may love a game that we hate, but escape rooms are very personal things and we rate them how we feel.
What do we rate on?
We use five metrics that we score each room on, these then give us an average score which gives the room its final ranking:
Operation – everything about the company itself, including; the booking system, waiting area, toilets, freebies
Puzzles – was there a good range of puzzles? Did they fit with the theme?
Room Design – Was it just a room with a desk or did they take it to the next level?
GM / Clues – Was the GM attentive? Were clues or hints delivered at appropriate times?
Excitement / ‘Wow’ Factor – Did anything stand out as being particularly special? On numerous occasions in rooms we have been known to say “Ooooooooo”.
