I think The Quizzler may have sabotaged the room
The Quizzler has escaped and placed a bomb within Superhero HQ. You need to break in to the hero training facility, find and disarm the bomb before your 60 minutes are up. Are you hero enough to save the city?
The second room we did at Lock and Code’s central Weston-Super-Mare (Weston) location directly after ‘Breakout’ was ‘The League of Superheroes’ and the rooms were both very different. This went more towards the heavy tech based room rather than padlocks.
We were there to deactivate a bomb before it went off and wiped out Weston, first dilemma, should we save Weston? As not saving Weston would mean a failed room we opted to do everything we could to deactivate the room.
When you enter this room the first thing that you notice is how dark it is, and as we were a team of four who were only given one torch this became frustrating very early on.
We found the first puzzle and knew exactly what to do but due to a piece of faulty equipment we couldn’t actually do. We questioned with the GM whether it was working but 10 minutes went by before he came in the room to bypass this puzzle as it actually wasn’t working!
The rest of the room mostly worked ok but there were still a few issues later on with some tech. Nothing in the room wowed us like I felt it should have but maybe my expectations were just too high.
This was a fun room but I feel it is perhaps past its prime and they need to do some maintenance to get it running as it should.
PUZZLES
This room contains a puzzle that ranks very high up my list of most annoying puzzles known to man. Some people are good at them, some are not, I’m worse than that. Fortunately my team was able to do it easily enough, but it felt like it was in there as a time filler and didn’t add anything to the room.
The other puzzles were also a little bit weak and with the failing tech it made them much harder than they should have been.
I was also not a fan of the final puzzle. It’s one where you only get one chance to do it and if you get it wrong, game over. This means you have to spend longer checking and double checking and again this felt like it was in there just to slow you down.
IMMERSION/ROOM DESIGN
The first room was ok, the other areas were a bit weak and actually reminded me of an old university friends house – think Marvel movie props everywhere. Generally I think it is safe to say that I didn’t feel like a superhero during this room.
GM/CLUE SYSTEM
Clues were delivered via a phone in the room when requested and nudges were timely. Other than the room being faulty and this taking time to pick up on by the GM, he did a decent job.
ANYTHING ELSE
I like what Lock and Code are doing and it’s good to see them trying a tech heavy room, but this was a little too rough around the edges for me. With some love and attention it has a chance of being better.
