Pier Pressure: Raver Quest (Brighton)

Pier Pressure: Raver Quest (Brighton)

Like a 90s club, only better!

A unique fusion of interactive puzzles, games and high octane raving! Raver Quest is high tech, high energy and high fun! Set in a 90s rave nightclub you have to interact with the technology, complete the mini games and solvethe puzzles.

All set to an epic 90s dance music soundtrack. Can you find out what has happened to your missing raver friends…

Brighton and Pier Pressure seem to go hand-in-hand when talking about escape rooms, in fact it’s strange it took us so long to check them out. But the planets aligned and everything was right for us to to a day trip to Brighton to fit in a few rooms. After escaping from Escape The Vault in a record breaking (at time of writing) 12 minutes , we were feeling pretty good about ourselves and ready for the next challenge.

We entered Pier Pressure and were warmly greeted by Shafi who made us feel right at home and had a good pre-game chat with us, including the health and safety briefing. After using the facilities, rehydrating, and dumping our bags in the locker we were handed over to our GM for Raver Quest, DJ Victory.

As soon as our GM was introduced, and yes it was quite an introduction, we knew that the rooms at Pier Pressure we’re going to be a bit special. Fully in character (straight out of a 90’s rave) DJ Victory explained why we were there and how she would assist us if needed. We understood and accepted the mission and as we entered the room we were instantly immersed in the 90’s.

PUZZLES

It wasn’t until we left this room and had time to reflect on it that we realised one thing, there were no padlocks, not one. This room relied heavily on tech which meant we were always left guessing about what was going to happen next.

All the puzzles were on theme, or close enough anyway and involved a dose of logic and a heavy use of colour (if you’re colour blind you may struggle). There was a bit of searching needed, but not a lot, and some puzzles could be completed solo and others required teamwork. One puzzle in particular took us a long time to complete and I think we were ready to rage quit through frustration before we finally got lucky and completed it.

Early on I would say that aspects of the room felt a little linear (not a criticism) but then later in the room they drop a huge curveball and everything just hits the proverbial fan.

IMMERSION/ROOM DESIGN

I never got to experience the 90s rave scene in Brighton so I can’t compare it to that, but in terms of immersion, I was loving it from the moment I entered the room. I’m a huge fan of 90s dance music so the fact that there were some classic tunes blaring out the entire time meant I was just happy to be in the room.

The room has everything you’d expect to see in a nightclub, albeit on a smaller scale, but it had a dance floor, DJ booth, bar and lasers – the essentials. Don’t even get me started on the ‘Party Button’ – instant fun!

GM/CLUE SYSTEM

DJ Victory was a wonderful DJ/GM and set the tone of the room even before we entered it, she explained the clues would be delivered through a scrolling digital screen as she had hacked into it from the outside, and true to her word, they were. Impressively she seemed to instinctively know when we were struggling and provided nudges and clues exactly when they were needed.

Another nice touch at Pier Pressure is that they give you a little card for completing the room, but to make this extra special they have a collection of stamps to choose from so they can ‘award’ you different stamps depending on how you performed. It reminded me of being in school and waiting for the teacher to hand out gold stars, I loved it!

ANYTHING ELSE

Pier Pressure have created a room that is 100% fun and if you like some classic old school tunes, you’ll have a great time. Being a nightclub it is dark, but not in a way that it hinders anything. I could have spent an hour in this room and been happy, even before adding in great puzzles!
